Ruth Pellow

My name is Ruth Pellow, and I have been a Fertility Nurse Specialist since 1992 after finishing nursing training at the Royal London Hospital. Work experience includes IVF wards at the Royal London, the London Women’s Clinic in Harley Street, St, Bartholomew’s Hospital London for ten years as the senior nursing co-ordinator, and at a clinic in Marbella, Costa del Sol, where I was pivotal in raising the awareness that travelling abroad for treatment, was an excellent alternative. 

In 2009, my husband Simon and I created IVF Treatment Abroad, where we now work with clinics in various countries helping couples and single women from around the world who either cannot get the relevant form of treatment in their home country or because it is prohibitively expensive there.  

Whilst this is the main core of our business, we have recently recognised that our services might be of benefit to patients undergoing treatment cycles in the UK and clinics in other countries that we don't currently work with. This need was highlighted by some of our UK patients who have decided to go abroad for treatment but also those who are in the midst of treatment in their home country.

Making the choice to undergo fertility treatment can be a huge one, regardless of the support you might have behind you. But sadly, not everyone has access to the specialist support they need and that we can offer. We know there can sometimes be a breakdown in communication or the patient can be bombarded with technical terms they don’t understand. But one of the things we hear a lot is that there is a lack of empathy with the patient. Rightly or wrongly, they feel that they have become a number on a production line, and this should never be the case.
